About the Earth Science Technology Office
The Earth Science Technology Office (ESTO) demonstrates and provides technologies that can be reliably and confidently applied to a broad range of missions – for Earth and space science and exploration systems – as well as facilitate practical applications that benefit society at large. As the lead technology office within the Earth Science division of the NASA Science Mission Directorate, ESTO is focused on the technological challenges inherent in space-based investigations of our planet and its dynamic, interrelated systems.
Through flexible, science-driven technology strategies and a competitive selection process, ESTO-funded technologies have supported numerous Earth and space science missions as well as commercial applications. Currently, we hold a broad portfolio of well over 400 past and active investments at over 70 institutions nationwide. From next generation sensors and instruments to communication systems and computer modeling, ESTO technologies will enable the future of many NASA missions.
Our Process
The ESTO model for technology development encompasses an end-to-end approach that includes:
- Planning investments and identifying technology needs based on annual requirements reviews with the technology and science communities
- Developing technologies through competitive solicitations that are evaluated through a peer review process
- Assessing the development strategy and maturity of funded technologies and leveraging investments through internal NASA program synergy and partnerships with other federal agencies, academia, and industry
- Infusing maturing technologies into future missions and measurements
